Why.. just why…
** Disclaimer: You are about to read about a man whining about a $21.19 knife. **FUNDAMENTAL FLAW: metal liner is only on one side(on the liner lock side). The other side of the handle is straight up just g10 plastic(unlikely there is nested metal). And the metal stopper that holds the blade in the lock position is NOT surrounded in all directions by the metal liner/plate. These are architectural flaws that I cannot let slide. I understand that the G10 material is very strong, but they are also known to be brittle under certain pressures. It would be beneficial to have a metal liner on both sides. Why.. just why? This knife is built like a tank, with a 4mm thick spine, it could’ve been built for heavy duty and survival tasks. I want it to be my EDC so bad. But NO, the architecture of this knife is all wrong. Guess I got what I paid for. I cannot afford the $260 ZT456 so I will have to accept this. This knife can break under stress or heavy duty use. For that reason I CANNOT give it 5/5.The manufacturer of this knife needs to put metal liners on both sides of the handle for this to be a reliable knife.Pros: I am very impressed with the machining. The blade and all the angles and tapering are almost 100% symmetric. My dad worked with CNC machines to make car parts so I know how hard it can be to make all these shapes, tapering, and angles on the blade symmetrical. Don’t really care if this is real D2 steel at this price point. For $21 I cannot complain, and I am quite happy with its performance with light cutting tasks. I will not use this knife for heavy duty use. The blade came hair shaving sharp. Passed the paper push cut test. This EF 0456 knife is the exact clone or “tribute” shall I say to the Zero Tolerance 456(ZT 456) that is a tank of knife. The EF0456 itself is very pretty. The blade glides on which I believe to be two rows of maybe ceramic bearings in a plastic case(they could be metal bearings). After breaking it in, the action is smooth as butter. The liner has a good weight that keeps the knife closed when closed and locked open when opened. The blade is so heavy when it swings open, you can feel a bit of a recoil. The click it makes when the blade locks in place is a very modest but rigid "plasticky pop," not quite as loud and metallic like a Spyderco. There is no blade play and is sturdy. The blade is almost perfectly centered between the handles(if you do look real closely, you will find that it’s just a hair off centered) but the tip of the blade is perfectly centered. They did put locktite on the pivot screw and thus it has not come loose. I give the execution of the design 5/5(which really is a compliment to the company ZT)Will post updates on how this plastic handle and metal/edge hold up under long term use.

This is a great value and on one of my favorite knives. I like the look, size, and grip of this knife. The blade stop pin is a little out of align on the knife I received and the liner lock didn't engage well unless I opened the knife hard. I used a Dremel with a diamond rod for a couple of seconds to adjust the stop notch on the back of the blade, see photos. And now it opens and locks in place with the full liner lock tab engaging the blade even when you slowly open the blade. It might have been dangerous without the adjustment. It is razor sharp and you wouldn't want it closing up on you. The handle, blade grind, finish are all top notch for the price.

After almost a year, I am buying a black version. I'm over the jade green. The steel is not D2. Probably a more common stainless. No patina after a lot of use. I reprofiled the edge and keep a razor edge with a few strokes on an Arkansas stone. Holds the edge for a usable amount of time. After several thousands of dollars spent on high end knives with premium steel, I still am very fond of this knife. I think I prefer the fiberglass scales to Titanium and the liner lock to the frame lock of the original, plus, How do you know your not getting a counterfeit with the same steel only marked 20cv on the used market. If ZT makes a sprint run of this knife and I have an opportunity, I'll probably get one.

I originally received two orange knives after ordering two black knives. Then I decided to get the jade model. We will see how this purchase goes. The lock issues were pretty much the same on all three knives, although one of the orange ones seemed to lock up better. I do have some EF knives with D2 markings on the blades. They do get a patina and may be real D2. It may be a model by model issue with EF as to the steel on these knives. They don't seem to make many changes on the old models.

First things first. As a knife aficionado with a modest collection of 60+ knives, I am pretty picky on what I edc. If you're reading this and you’re on the fence about whether or not you want to buy it. Scroll up and just get one. You won’t be disappointed and if you are, you’re not out much. Email me and I’d probably buy it off you if it’s not broken. I’m about to order my second one in jade(got black first).

The box it comes in is very plain. But as things go you can’t judge things buy the cover, or box in this case. I was surprised at the fit and finish bring the price range it is in. No play in the blade or bearings. Handle feels solid. Flips, more of a gliding action really, open without hesitation with a quick flick of the wrist. No over exaggerated hand movements needed. Blade itself is very sturdy, thicker than I expected and feels like it would stand up to some real abuse. Weight and balance of overall knife is well distributed. Girth of the blade helps put the cutting pressure just slightly forward of the middle, which to my knowledge is where you want it.

Now to the cutting edge. Oob this knife was exceptionally sharp. I could shave arm hair (my sop sharpness test) with slight force pressing in. I am obsessed with having my knives as sharp as possible. I want a wicked edge system but they aren’t cheap. I am. I used my smiths tri hone Arkansas stone set to get this as sharp as I can get (approximately 1200grit fine stone). I polish it off by pulling off my leather belt as a makeshift strop ( mine is on order). Blade is now so sharp I feel as though if I slipped while using it(not a real concern- scaling on g10 handle is fairly aggressive) I’d definitely require stitches if it didn’t cut right into my bone. But that is exactly how I like my blades.

There is some discussion I’ve seen about the validity of the Blade material being D2. I have 3 other D2 blades. I’m no metallurgist but I sharpen a lot of knives. You’re going to spend some time getting this one to the point I did. You may not want to, it’s edc ready oob. I’m just picky about my knives. Back to it, I spent just shy of an hour honing and stropping this knife. It doesn’t sharpen quickly which leads me to believe it is in fact D2. By contrast I can sharpen my buck 110 (420j2 hc ss steel I believe) from dull to razor sharp in about 20 minutes give or take. Sharpening my other 4 D2 blades were marathon sessions as well. They were all $100+ knives. This one is under 30 with equal quality. I can’t wait to get the other one and rotate these edc workhorses.

This is incredibly wordy and if you are still reading this and haven’t bought it let me leave you with this last thought.

I hate writing reviews. I never do it. First time I’ve written one since I started shopping amazon years ago.
