Not What I Expect From Benchmade

Not What I Expect From Benchmade
I own this knife and love it so wanted to order a second knife. I ordered and received the knife but when opened found I was sent serrated version instead of the plain blade that I ordered. Return was fairly easy and I ordered this again. My problem is like another reviewer, the blade does not close in the center of the handle so the black coating is wearing off. I really did not want to return a second time so I kept it. This does not affect the performance but I expect more from Benchmade, especially at this price. I own and use a lot of Benchmade knives, and this is the poorest fit and finish I have gotten. Next time I will buy when I can hold it and make sure I get the quality I expect from Benchmade.Update: I was irritated at first with fit and finish but changed to 4 stars now as it is a wonderful knife to use, carry and sharpen. 5 stars if fit and finish better.

I really like this knife. I have edc'd it only a few times, as the large blade can look silly when you whip it out at Longhorn to open a peppermint wrapper.
No vertical blade play, extremely slight to no horizontal blade play (confident enough to not have any doubt if I ever need to use it in a defensive situation).
The grip isn't nearly as bad as many people complain it is. It is extremely secure and shaped to not come out of your hands. However, if you do use it for over an hour a day for cutting/other tasks, you will probably get one or two callouses on your hand after a couple days. But it is not at all painful or anything when you hold it, unless you have more delicate hands than the average person. And the "jimping" on the metal liners is very unique and effective.
I'm not sure if the glass breaker would last after several very strong hits, I have seen the benchmade video testing it successfully but I haven't tested it myself. I'm sure it would knock out a few people trying to mug you though.
Overall very good, just intimidating to some people if you use it in public, as with most cool things.

EDIT: After owning this knife for several months and carrying it every day to work (Chick fil a), it is still my favorite knife. The action is still perfectly smooth and as is blade centering.

Do not buy this knife unless you also plan to buy and use oil regularly to keep it from rusting. Personally, I coat the blade every night with 3-In-One and put a drop over the axis pin to keep the action smooth.
In the event that the butterfly logo or Osborne logo rusts, use Barkeepers Friend and a toothbrush to scrub it for a couple minutes and it will look brand new again.

The only complaints I have are:

    •Intimidation Factor (already mentioned)

•Wearing down pants- After carrying it many times in my Levi's, the top of the pocket has begun to fray which will essentially make me buy new expensive jeans whenever it gets too bad. However, it hasn't worn down my Chick fil a pants despite being clipped there much more often than on my jeans.

•Unwieldiness- this knife is fine for tasks like cutting rope and cardboard, but if you need to awkwardly maneuver your hand into a confined space, you'll have a more difficult time using this knife than a smaller one.

Most folders are not designed to be a true defensive option. This one is. If you do not have the option of carrying a full sized fixed blade fighting knife, this is the next best thing.

The handle is long enough, and grippy enough, to inspire confidence using this knife with force and speed. I especially like the design where the handle meets the blade. It flares in a way that keeps the hand from sliding up on one's own blade when striking at full force. I have trained with Rondell Dagger, Dirk and Bowie, but not with folders, so I do not pretend to be an expert. But some of the tactics that I do know would translate to this knife because of the aggressive design and longish handle.

The Axis lock is the best in the business. One can open this knife with one hand nearly as fast as an assisted knife, yet with the simplicity and reliability that the Axis lock is known for.

Despite the length of this knife, and how solid it feels, it is lightweight, and fits in a front pocket with no problems. I think that I am going to take the clip off. The knife feels better in the hand without it, and I like to have the knife completely out of sight in a front pocket, instead of clipped into the top of the pocket where it can be seen.

The blade shape, steel, and sharpness are first rate. I have a number of high quality knives, but none that slice quite like this. It cuts like a razor blade. You probably have to experience it for yourself. I just rest the blade against twine or cardboard, and it cuts. It is surprising how little force or draw one needs to cut with this knife. The shape of the tip works well for penetration. It will punch through materials that a folder has no business punching through. I wouldn't use this for chores around the homestead - the profile is all wrong for that- this is more of a straight-up weapon than a versatile tool. Buy the Griptilian if you want versatile. Buy this if you think you might need to fight your way out of a tough spot.
